It’s my blog’s birthday and you get a gift!

Cupcake-blackbackgroundMy little book blog turns one today!

This began as a fun project for me to keep track of what I was reading and to have an easy way of sharing those reviews with others. A couple of people mentioned that my Goodreads was a factor in their reading decisions (I can’t imagine anything more flattering!), and I thought this would be a cool way to connect people with more books they love.

Lots of algorithms try to do that, but in my experience it tends to bring up the same books over and over, and it’s so obvious that the computer hasn’t read anything to determine the similarities of authors or stories. How could it? That’s what I’m trying to create here: reviews with links to more reviews that I think are similar because I’ve actually read them all.

When I looked back on the year there were a few moments that stood out as highlights to me. Here are the links to two of my favorite posts of 2015:

A Tarot Reading of Your Novel – This got a lot of traffic when Maggie Stiefvater discovered it (thanks to my lovely friend Erin!) and it was nice to have my work recognized. I put a lot of thought into this post and I think it’s one of the most unique things I’ve written.

2015 – Year in Review

This was just fun to do because I got to see all the books I read (both the amazing and not-so-good) and it felt like a major accomplishment.

UPDATED: This giveaway is now closed – congrats to Hailey and Ali!

As part of my celebration, I’m doing a giveaway! Enter to win a signed 1st edition of Veronica Roth’s Insurgent, or an (unsigned) 1st edition of Allegiant! (U.S. winners only – To my international readers, (I love you!) but I can’t ship these books outside of the U.S. at this time).

Thank you to each of my followers for such a fun year! Here’s to a second one, and happy reading! ❤

One Lovely Blog Award

blog awardI saw this award on Syc’s blog, The Lit Mermaid and I wanted to send the wave to some of my writing friends, because I think their blogs are quite lovely of course. To do that I figured I should write mine first and toss the ball onward, so here we go! (Be sure to check out Syc’s blog and all the other writers below!) 🙂

The Rules:

1. You must thank the person who nominated you and include a link to their blog.
2. You must list the rules and display the award.
3. You must add 7 facts about yourself.
4. You must nominate 5 other bloggers and comment on one of their posts to let them know they have been nominated.

Seven Facts About Me:

  1. Two years ago I conquered my fear of being underwater and spent a vacation snorkeling!
  2. My depth perception is terrible – I can’t go around a corner or through a doorway without bumping the edge. Tables and chairs too, I am guaranteed to get the corners right in the softest part of my side. Clearly my brain thinks I’m about 3 inches narrower than I really am (or have ever been).
  3. I hate walking barefoot across any kind of tile. Grout freaks me out. I feel like it’s never clean and can’t ever be clean because it’s the goo between what you are supposed to walk on, and nobody will change my mind about this.
  4. I never enjoyed math classes but 5 of my 6 jobs have been finance-related.
  5. My favorite weekends are the ones where we decided the night before to travel somewhere. There’s nothing like throwing a couple things in a bag that night and leaving at 6 am the next morning, no plans, no notes to anyone.
  6. Last year I went out to get blond highlights and came home with bright red hair instead, and it was just as fun as it sounds!
  7. When I was little I wanted to be an artist. My parents said there was no money in that. So then I said I wanted to be a writer. 🙂

My Nominees:

The Real Neat Blog Award

real neat blog award

Thank you Susanne Valenti for nominating me! Check out her blog here – she has a book coming out in October!

The Rules:

  1. Put the award logo on your blog
  2. Answer the 7 question set by the person who nominated you and create 7 new ones
  3. Thank the people who nominated you, linking to their blog
  4. Nominate however many people you like, linking to their blogs
  5. Let them know you nominated them

The questions for me are:

  1. Which book character would you want to meet and why? Right now I’d love to meet Manon Blackbeak from Queen of Shadows – I think she’s fascinating. I have so many questions about her life and the Thirteen. If she didn’t kill me, maybe I could score a ride on her wyvern.
  2. Which book do you wish they’d adapt into a movie or TV series? Sabriel – if done well. I think this would make an amazing movie if the magic wasn’t done in B movie quality.
  3. Who is your favourite author? If I’m being honest, probably Maggie Stiefvater. I’m kind of in awe of how precise and powerful her prose is. She created amazing characters in The Raven Cycle and it all feels so real.
  4. Which Disney character would you be? Belle, obviously. That library? Those mountains? That kitchen staff? DONE.
  5. Do you have any pets and if so what? Not yet, but I really want a cuddly dachshund to sit on my lap and inspire/distract me while I write.
  6. Is there any book that you would change the ending of and how if you would? If I don’t like a story it tends to be more than just the ending, so I don’t think I’d change anything I’ve read. Usually I’m not connecting with the character or their motivations, and that pretty much effects the entire book. 🙂
  7. What’s your idea of a perfect night in/out? Night in: roaring fire, writing/reading a good book Night out: delicious food someplace, followed by a movie or a comedy show or something

The questions for my nominees are:

  1. If you could learn any language which one would you pick?
  2. Which ongoing series are you most excited about this fall?
  3. If you could meet any author who would you pick?
  4. What is your favorite season?
  5. What is the best book you’ve read this year?
  6. What is your writing fuel? Coffee? Tea? M&Ms?
  7. What’s the best film you saw in a theater this year?

My nominees are:

Check out their blogs! 🙂

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers award

I’m so happy to announce that I’ve been nominated for this award! Thank you to Susanne Valenti for my nomination!

The rules are:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their site.
  2. Put the award logo on your blog.
  3. Answer the ten questions you were given.
  4. Make up ten new questions for your nominees to answer.
  5. Nominate ten other blogs.

Here are my answers:

Do you have a TV series addiction and what is it?

Well, lately it’s not so secret, but I absolutely love Avatar: The Last Airbender. The world, the characters, the writing – LOVE it!!! It’s so much more than a “kids cartoon” – and the writers make it a point to have multi-generational, powerful women as main characters. Bechdel pass, every episode!

Which book character would you secretly like to marry?

Ummm…..this is a tough one. Perhaps the Wizard Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle. I feel quite sure I’d never be bored!

What’s the most exciting thing happening to you this September?

QUEEN OF SHADOWS, obviously! September 1st hasn’t been this magical since Harry Potter.

Are you a Christmas freak or a Scrooge?

I’m not a Christmas freak in the sense of ugly sweaters or crazy decorating, but I do love me some Christmas music and snow! Plus I tend to romanticize the one time of year people think about other people and the state of the world, and all that.

Which book world do you wish really existed?

I am torn between the Harry Potter universe and the Sabriel universe, and obviously it depends on how much magical power I get in either one.

Which book series has you wishing for more?

Currently, Throne of Glass, but in terms of series that are “finished” I’d say The Hero and the Crown and Sabriel. I could read about those characters forever! Only I can’t, because the authors have claimed they “moved on” or something.

Would you rather be a vampire or a wizard?

Wizard – no contest

Which magic power would you have?

If I could only have one? Flying, or teleporting. I want free travel perks.

Happy ending or shocking twist?

I am fine with both as long as it suits the mood of the story. If I’m reading a YA contemporary and find out in the last 10 pages that a sorcerer just killed half the characters, I’d be a little mad. I’d also want that author’s agent, because they are clearly very open-minded and have the best sales skills in the country.

What’s the first thing you’d do if the dead started rising?

I have had this plan for years now, and my friends are aware of it. I get all the fuel and supplies I can and hoof it north, to Wisconsin, where my clever friend Sarah knows how to make anything – I mean ANYthing – edible. And her husband knows how to hunt. We would survive alone in the north in a cabin, safe from everyone with plenty to eat. I have basically no survival skills, so my contribution will be writing the history of society’s demise until somebody figures out a way to remove the zombie threat.

My nominees are:

Erin Bay

Akshaya R.

That Owl Girl

Christine Lynn

Janella Angeles

Ella Dyson

Madeleine Colis

Caitlin’s Reading Nook

Anna Leighton

And the questions for you are:

  1. What is the best book you’ve read this year?
  2. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go first and why?
  3. When you write, do you outline first or just pants it?
  4. When you aren’t reading/writing what do you like to do?
  5. What TV show do you binge-watch?
  6. You can’t leave the house without ________?
  7. Books or e-reader?
  8. What is a cause/social issue you care deeply about?
  9. What magical/superpower would you pick?
  10. What fun blogs have you found lately? (Maybe tag them in your post!) 🙂
